B&B + Oregon Zoo Foundation Calendar – Mazama Newt

| Calendar

B&B is honored to partner with and showcase the Oregon Zoo Foundation in our 2026 community desk calendar! The Oregon Zoo Foundation helps the Oregon Zoo care for animals like the Mazama Newt, inspire conservation action, and educate the public, funding programs in wildlife research, species recovery, and environmental education both locally and around the world.

Each month, the calendar showcases a beautiful photograph of a zoo animal and highlights inspiring stories of conservation successes and how individuals and corporations can make a difference. Ways to contribute include joining the Sustaining Herd, becoming a Giving Circle member, or supporting other initiatives that help animals thrive at the zoo.

We hope this calendar raises your awareness about the Oregon Zoo
Foundation’s work and how to get involved!

Mazama Newt | B&B Calendar September Featured Animal

There’s only one place on earth to find the Mazama newt: Oregon’s Crater Lake National Park. Once a top predator that kept the lake’s ecosystem in balance, the newt is now at risk due to invasive signal crayfish, which have destroyed 90% of its habitat, compete for food, attack the newts, and drive them into open water where trout prey on them. Crayfish also consume algae that other invertebrates rely on, further damaging the ecosystem.

The Mazama newt is unique to the Pacific Northwest and listed as state sensitive in Oregon. With federal protection potentially years away, immediate action is critical. The Oregon Zoo, in partnership with Crater Lake National Park and the High Desert Museum, launched the first-ever breeding program for Mazama newts in 2025, closely replicating the lake’s conditions to support newts through every life stage. Partners also developed a holistic recovery plan focusing on crayfish eradication, breeding and release protocols, research priorities, and a coordinated 10-year action plan.

If successful, this effort will restore Mazama newts to their native waters and help rejuvenate Crater Lake’s ecosystem. With more than 25 years of conservation success—from condors to butterflies—the Oregon Zoo brings experience and hope to this unique species.
