B&B is honored to partner with and showcase the Oregon Zoo Foundation in our 2026 community desk calendar! The Oregon Zoo Foundation helps the Oregon Zoo care for animals like the California Condor, inspire conservation action, and educate the public, funding programs in wildlife research, species recovery, and environmental education both locally and around the world.
Each month, the calendar showcases a beautiful photograph of a zoo animal and highlights inspiring stories of conservation successes and how individuals and corporations can make a difference. Ways to contribute include joining the Sustaining Herd, becoming a Giving Circle member, or supporting other initiatives that help animals thrive at the zoo.
We hope this calendar raises your awareness about the Oregon Zoo

California Condor | B&B Calendar October Featured Animal
Stretching 10 feet from wingtip to wingtip, California condors are the largest land birds in North America. Once ranging from British Columbia to Baja California and inland to the Rockies, they likely bred in the Pacific Northwest, though they haven’t been documented in Oregon for over a century. Condors play a critical role in ecosystems by recycling nutrients and safely disposing of carrion, yet they faced near extinction in the 20th century due to threats like DDT, lead poisoning, intentional poisoning, and ingesting microtrash.
The California condor was the first species listed under the Endangered Species Act in 1973. By 1982, only 22 remained in the wild, and by 1987 all were brought into human care to prevent extinction. Thanks to recovery programs, including those led by the Oregon Zoo, the population has grown to around 560 birds, most of which now soar freely in the wild.
