B&B + Oregon Zoo Foundation Calendar – Lesser Flamingos

| Calendar

B&B is honored to partner with and showcase the Oregon Zoo Foundation in our 2026 community desk calendar! The Oregon Zoo Foundation helps the Oregon Zoo care for animals like the Lesser Flamingos, inspire conservation action, and educate the public, funding programs in wildlife research, species recovery, and environmental education both locally and around the world.

Each month, the calendar showcases a beautiful photograph of a zoo animal and highlights inspiring stories of conservation successes and how individuals and corporations can make a difference. Ways to contribute include joining the Sustaining Herd, becoming a Giving Circle member, or supporting other initiatives that help animals thrive at the zoo.

We hope this calendar raises your awareness about the Oregon Zoo
Foundation’s work and how to get involved!

Lesser Flamingos | B&B Calendar November Featured Animal

Lesser flamingos are the smallest of the six flamingo species and one of the pinkest of the old-world flamingos. Native to Africa, they get their vibrant color from pigments in spirulina, the algae that forms the bulk of their diet. Flocking helps them evade predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and jackals, while courtship involves synchronized marches, neck-stretching, and wing-flapping to display their brilliant feathers. Adults undergo a flightless molt for about three weeks each year.

Lesser flamingos breed primarily on large, undisturbed alkaline and saline lakes across East Africa, with smaller colonies in West Africa, southern Africa, Asia, India, and Pakistan. Nests made of raised mud keep eggs cool and dry, and chicks are fed a liquid diet, walking within a week of hatching. Adults average 35.5 inches in length and weigh between 2.5 and 5 pounds, while hatchlings weigh just 2.5 to 3.5 ounces.

The Oregon Zoo Foundation participates in Willamette Week’s Give!Guide, an annual campaign that connects donors to local causes and supports hundreds of nonprofits. Giving through the campaign in November and December benefits wildlife and communities across the region, continuing a decades-long tradition of community impact.
