B&B is honored to partner with and showcase the Oregon Zoo Foundation in our 2026 community desk calendar! The Oregon Zoo Foundation helps the Oregon Zoo care for animals like the African Painted Dog, inspire conservation action, and educate the public, funding programs in wildlife research, species recovery, and environmental education both locally and around the world.
Each month, the calendar showcases a beautiful photograph of a zoo animal and highlights inspiring stories of conservation successes and how individuals and corporations can make a difference. Ways to contribute include joining the Sustaining Herd, becoming a Giving Circle member, or supporting other initiatives that help animals thrive at the zoo.
We hope this calendar raises your awareness about the Oregon Zoo

African Painted Dog | B&B Calendar August Featured Animal
African painted dogs—also known as African wild dogs—live across the savannas and grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa. A member of the true dog family, each painted dog has a uniquely patterned coat, and their oversized, satellite-dish ears help them detect prey and stay cool in the heat.
These endurance hunters roam vast ranges of 80 to 800 square miles and pursue prey at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour for several miles at a time. They live in highly social packs led by a dominant breeding pair, and their cooperative nature extends to raising pups—adults regurgitate food for the young and care for pups until they mature at around a year old. Painted dogs live about 10 years in the wild and in human care.
Listed as Endangered, African painted dogs now number only 3,000 to 6,000 across their remaining range, threatened by disease, habitat fragmentation, conflicts with humans, and competition with larger predators. The painted dogs at the Oregon Zoo participate in the AZA Species Survival Plan to help safeguard the species.
The Oregon Zoo also supports conservation efforts across Africa, including the Somali Giraffe Project in Kenya—focused on protecting critically endangered Somali giraffes through research, education, anti-poaching, and habitat restoration—and the Niassa Carnivore Project in Mozambique, which works to conserve lions, painted dogs, and other carnivores through community-based solutions.
