You recognize them immediately when you see them…or feel them. You run your fingers across an embossed invitation. Tilt a package and watch a foil logo catch the light. Pick up a postcard and wonder, just for a second, whether those water droplets are real.
Before the reader absorbs a word, the printed piece communicated something about the brand—this is something special.
That is the power of print embellishment.
What is an embellishment?
Embellishments are decorative textures, metallic accents, coatings, and specialty cuts that add texture, shine, depth, or shape. Print embellishments include special colors, tactile and dimensional spot varnishes, foil stamping, metallic inks, and embossing and debossing. Finishing techniques such as die cutting or intricate folding also qualify as embellishments.
Embellishments can be used on a range of printed products including business cards, packaging, direct mail, presentation folders, menus, invitations… for the documents, occasions, and opportunities that need to rise above just providing information.
This trend is growing. In the 2026 Taktiful/WhatTheyThink Embellishment Study, 61% of print providers surveyed said they had seen increased demand for digital embellishments during the previous year, compared with 29% in the prior survey.
Why embellishments work: They PERFORM
Print already has something digital communication doesn’t: a physical presence. Embellishment adds a seductive layer on top of that advantage by engaging more than just the eye. It makes the piece perform: catch the light, exude texture, suggest movement and create dimension.
Providing just enough sparkle to make a customer do a double take.
Foil stamping in gold or copper on company packaging suggests a premium product. Blind embossing on a museum gala invitation that evokes a timeless, classic feel of paper that has shaped by hand and by die for generations. Raised spot UV on a direct mail piece can elicit that ‘wow’ effect that entices the receiver to hold it… just a few seconds longer.
Direct Mail: Earn Those Extra Seconds of Attention
There is mounting evidence that adding an embellishment can make a postcard linger in a customer’s hands those few critical seconds longer.
One example. The Foil & Specialty Effects Association partnered with a car wash company on an A/B test involving approximately 7,500 postcards. Half were conventional four-color postcards; the other half added raised and textured coatings and raised digital metallic decoration. The plain postcards generated a 12.8% response rate, while the embellished version generated 16.8%—a 31.25% improvement.
Print embellishment gives mail another dimension. And another look.
Consider a garden center mailing that nods to Portland’s rainy personality. Instead of another rectangular postcard, this piece is a square. Gold foil highlights a key word that sparks curiosity. Raindrops receive raised Spot UV so they appear glassy and wet and can be felt beneath a fingertip. On the back, gold foil spotlights the logo, and textured recycled stock reinforces a sustainability message.
Embellishments tell a story.
Packaging: Touch that elevates your brand
Packaging has a different job. It doesn’t just need to get noticed on a shelf; it needs to communicate what’s special inside. Your customers see your packaging first, and if you want to introduce a luxury element to your brand, this is also the place to start.
Imagine a premium Portland chocolate brand.
The logo gets stamped in copper foil. A Pacific Northwest mountain range is embossed onto the carton. Flowers receive selective Spot UV while surrounding leaves remain matte. A custom die-cut window reveals the chocolates inside. The sustainable substrate communicates the brand’s values.
Taken as a whole, the embellished package communicates an experience—minimalist elegance, pride of place, and a premium product.
Embellishments communicate brand identity.
Embellished Invitations: Print Worth Keeping
There are printed pieces whose purpose goes beyond delivering information, where the piece needs to rise above and make a larger statement. Here is where embellishments shine.
If it’s meant to be held, saved, or shown to others, embellishments communicate importance, ceremony, permanence.
Anniversary or corporate milestone — 25th, 50th, 75th
Fundraiser gala invitation
Museum or gallery exhibition catalog
Product launch packaging
Fine dining or event menu
Hotel/resort services booklet
Award certificates/donor recognition
Consider an invitation for a gala event printed on visibly recycled stock. A large letterform is blind embossed into the paper. The event title receives restrained copper foil. The year is embossed without ink. It communicates prestige and a sense of occasion.
Embellishments elevate print.
