B&B + NATIVE ARTS AND CULTURES FOUNDATION CALENDAR – JuLY 2024

We’re excited to announce our 2024 partnership with The Native Arts and Cultures Foundation, a Native-led, national nonprofit that advances equity and cultural knowledge, focusing on the power of arts and collaboration to strengthen Native communities and promote positive social change with American Indian, Native Hawaiian, and Alaska Native peoples in the United States. The July 2024 Calendar features Marie Watt and their work Chords to Other Chords; a series of three site-responsive neon sculptures that aim to amplify stories and conversations about land, stewardship, and place.

We hope that you will use this calendar as an opportunity to explore Native arts and cultures to provoke thought and spark discussion. The year might be halfway over but that means there’s still another half to go! Be sure to get your calendar absolutely free by jumping on our list HERE.

NACF 2023 SHIFT – Transformative Change & Indigenous Arts Award – Visual Arts

Marie Watt is an interdisciplinary artist and 2011 NACF Artist Fellow who creates large-scale, community-driven works that spark conversations about connectedness to place, one another, and the universe.

About the Project

Chords to Other Chords is a series of three site-responsive neon sculptures that aim to amplify stories and conversations about land, stewardship, and place. The phrase “TURTLE ISLAND” is “stitched” in light and
sited with public institutions in and around Marie’s ancestral homelands of the Seneca Nation and Haudenosaunee in New York. Co-produced with lead partner Forge Project, events will feature poets, artists,
scholars, and other thought leaders in conversation with the themes of Turtle Island. The art installation premiered at The Center for Native Arts and Cultures from August to October 2023.

Artwork Title: Chords to Other Chords (Relative)

Description: A monumental neon sculpture that is an affirmation of the land and the Indigenous people who are ephemeral monuments to this territory. It is a way of seeing ourselves in public places that have ties to our ancestors and to future generations.
