We’re excited to announce our 2024 partnership with The Native Arts and Cultures Foundation, a Native-led, national nonprofit that advances equity and cultural knowledge, focusing on the power of arts and collaboration to strengthen Native communities and promote positive social change with American Indian, Native Hawaiian, and Alaska Native peoples in the United States. The June 2024 Calendar features Lehuauakea and their contemporary Indigenous Hawaiian version of the Pride flag.

Native Heritage: Kanaka Maoli/Native Hawaiian
NACF 2022 LIFT – Early Career Support for Native Artists Award – Kapa Making
Lehuauakea is a māhū mixed -Native Hawaiian interdisciplinary artist and kapa maker from Pāpa’ikou on Moku O Keawe, the Big Island of Hawai’i. Through a range of traditional Kanaka Maoli craft based media, their art addresses cultural and biological ecologies, Indigenous identity, and contemporary environmental degradation.
About the Project
E Ho’āla Ka Lupe: To Awaken the Kite is dedicated to the revival and recreation of traditional Native Hawaiian kites (lupe). Lehuauakea’s LIFT project culminated in a community celebration of their work in collaboration with KALO Hawaiian Civic Club at The Center for Native Arts and Cultures in July 2023.
Artwork Title: Mana Māhū
Medium: Earth pigments and plant dyes on kapa (bark cloth)
Description: A contemporary Indigenous Hawaiian version of the Pride flag, this piece celebrates the spectrum of māhū or Queer/Non-Binary identity in Kanaka Maoli culture. This spectrum of representation is shown by the range of colors given by earth pigments and plant dyes.
