YOSHIHIRO KITAI | Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) Calendar | november Featured ARTIST
Title of work: conflux #11
Born in Japan, Yoshihiro Kitai has lived for over 20 years in the United States – his experience of cultural transition and navigation/observation of cultural differences continues to inform his art. Yoshihiro’s works on paper and panel often depict circuitous paths, reflecting the ups and downs of getting from here to there, and refer both in form and material to Japanese painting traditions.
Kitai’s artwork represents, in an abstract way, an immigrant’s perspective of a society of mixed cultures and races. Using traditional Japanese materials, he combines his background with a Western abstract art perspective. Traditional Japanese artworks often are about seasons, time, nature, and life. He used background colors to create the shifting times of morning, mid-day, and evening. The dots represent people, and color creates groupings and movement. Combined with gold and silver clouds it creates a birds’ eye view of his perspective on society.
Conflux #11 is a 6’ x 21’ piece that features Kissho Gansai watercolor, gold and silver leaf. Visit this art locally at the Multnomah County’s Central Courthouse on Floor 9 or up close by viewing here.
