Sea Otter | B&B Calendar March Featured Animal
Sea otters are keystone species that play a vital role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. They spend most of their lives near the shore, swimming belly-up, diving for food, and using rocks as tools to crack open clams and other shellfish. With the densest fur of any mammal, they stay warm while foraging and grooming, and mothers care for their pups for up to a year until they are ready to dive and hunt on their own.
At the Oregon Zoo, sea otters live in the Steller Cove exhibit, where they receive expert care and a diet that includes clams, crabs, shrimp, mussels, squid, and fish. The zoo also partners with the Elakha Alliance, a nonprofit founded by tribal leaders, conservationists, and advocates, to help restore sea otters to the Oregon coast. By supporting this work, the zoo helps strengthen marine ecosystems and promote resilient coastal habitats that benefit wildlife and people alike.
