Humboldt Penguin | B&B Calendar January Featured Animal
Humboldt penguins live along the west coasts of Peru and Chile, named for the cold Humboldt Current that shapes their habitat. They spend most of their time in the water hunting fish, diving up to 200 feet and swimming as fast as 30 mph, using their wings as flippers and webbed feet to steer.
At the Oregon Zoo, one of the largest Humboldt penguin collections in the U.S. is cared for with a diet of capelin, smelt, and herring, giving visitors a chance to connect with these remarkable birds and learn about the challenges they face in the wild, including overfishing and habitat disruption.
