B&B is honored to partner with and showcase the Oregon Zoo Foundation in our 2026 community desk calendar! The Oregon Zoo Foundation helps the Oregon Zoo care for animals like the American Black Bear, inspire conservation action, and educate the public, funding programs in wildlife research, species recovery, and environmental education both locally and around the world.
Each month, the calendar showcases a beautiful photograph of a zoo animal and highlights inspiring stories of conservation successes and how individuals and corporations can make a difference. Ways to contribute include joining the Sustaining Herd, becoming a Giving Circle member, or supporting other initiatives that help animals thrive at the zoo.
We hope this calendar raises your awareness about the Oregon Zoo

American Black Bear | B&B Calendar March Featured Animal
Black bears are found throughout Canada, the United States, and the northern half of Mexico, favoring remote and inaccessible areas. Highly adaptable, they occupy a wide variety of habitats, though they’re most commonly found in dense forests rich in berries, nuts, and vegetation.
As the smallest bear species native to North America, males can weigh up to 600 pounds and females up to 200. Despite their name, their fur ranges widely in color—from yellow-brown and cinnamon to grey-blue—often depending on their home region. Black bears are opportunistic omnivores, eating everything from fruits and nuts to small mammals and carrion. When winter food is scarce, they can slow their metabolism and spend months denning.
Black bears rely on keen senses of smell and hearing, communicating through body language, vocalizations, and scent markings. They breed in June and July, but implantation of the embryo is delayed until November, with cubs born in January or February while the mother is in her winter den. Cubs start out weighing less than a pound and stay with their mother for about 17 months before venturing out on their own. Black bears typically live 10 to 20 years and remain numerous across their range, though habitat loss, poaching, and vehicle strikes continue to pose threats.
You can help ensure a better future for wildlife by joining the Giving Circle. As a member, you support animal well-being both locally and around the world, joining a community of families and individuals making a meaningful, lasting impact—together.
