Led by Emmy Award-winning choreographers Jamey Hampton and Ashley Roland, Portland-based BodyVox is known for its visual virtuosity, distinctive wit, and unique ability to combine dance, theater, and film into breathtaking productions rich in imagery, athleticism, and humor.
Since its founding in 1997, the company has toured to critical acclaim on stages around the world and developed nine award-winning films, 30 original shows, and three operas, featuring more than 270 original dances. This season they celebrated “25 Years of Optimism in Motion!” – you can watch a video summary of their year here.
Featured on the July calendar is a photo of company dancer Theresa Hanson at the Portland Japanese Garden. A great example of their unique voice that is equally influenced by its Northwest roots and worldview. BodyVox is a rare dance company with a distinctive approach that is theatrical, rich in imagery, and diverse in style and form.
Their current performance season has already concluded but keep your eyes out for their upcoming season of events. Taking a dance class more your speed? The BodyVox Dance Center serves as an important regional hub for dance innovation, education, and creativity. The Dance Center maintains a performance training program (the Junior Artist Generator Program, or JAG), as well as daily classes for teens and adults. Taught by an exceptional roster of professional dancers and teaching artists, BodyVox provides instruction in multidisciplinary dance styles including ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, modern, improvisation, and dance-based fitness classes. From absolute beginners to professional dancers, there is a place for everybody at BodyVox.
