RUBÉN TREJO | Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) Calendar | October Featured ARTIST
Title of work: Figure in Multi Dimensions #2
Northwest artist Ruben Trejo was born in a railroad boxcar in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1937 and passed away in Spokane, WA in 2009. His parents were indigenous Tarascan Natives who came from San Pedro, Michoacan, Mexico as part of the massive immigration to the US at the onset of the Mexican revolution.
His isolation from major centers of Chicano culture led him to search for self-identity through his art. He explored a dynamic, multidimensional worldview through his sculpture and mixed-media pieces. His pre-Columbian heritage is reflected in his art and connects to his identity as an American. To make his work accessible to everyone, he places familiar shapes and objects that are easy to identify with.
