Ryan Pierce’s paintings, prints, and experimental artist books envision a world recovering from human industry amid the throes of climate chaos. He draws on influences from ecological theory, literature, and folk art to create scenes that portray the resilience of the natural world.

Pierce is the co-founder, with activist Amy Harwood, of Signal Fire, a group that facilitates wilderness residencies and retreats for artists of all disciplines. He is also the founding Director of Wide Open Studios, an arts and ecology field program.

Title of work: weird nurse

BB and Regional Arts CC May Calendar

The May calendar features Ryan’s art, Weird Nurse. The image portrays a near-future Pacific Northwest landscape that hybridizes both wild and cultivated elements. An old-growth nurse log forms the foundation for a trellised pomegranate tree as well as a strangely thornless devil’s club (Oplopanax horridus). His intention is to invite speculation as to how climate change, rewilding, and genetic engineering might sculpt the so-called “natural” or “native” landscape of the future, and to what degree those terms ring hollow even now.

Visit this art locally at the Multnomah County’s Central Courthouse on Floor 11. Created with flashe and spray paint on canvas over panel, this 6′ by 8′ piece really catches your eye.

Print details: This calendar page is printed on the Xerox Iridess Digital Press. The look was achieved using CMYK process plus silver toner for a metallic pop. The paper substrate is Neenah Classic Techweave, Solar White.
